Worship Auxillaries
Order of Saint John
The Order of Saint John is recognized as one of the oldest auxillary orders of the church dating back, according to some sources, as far as the 4th or 5th centuries. It is named after John, the disciple, who was sent along with Peter to prepare the upper room for Jesus when he desired to share his last meal with them. Originally for boys only, the Order is now recognized as a special auxillary of young men and women who wish to serve the church in one of the following capacities:
- Acolyte: 1st level of service. Fourth grade and up
- Crucifer/Banner: 2nd level of service. Seventh grade and up
- Banner/Torch/Bible Bearer: 3rd level of service. Confirmed
The Order is rich in tradition and service to the worship ministry of the church. Members are trained and expected to perform duties with a sense of respect and responsibility. Members will be installed at a service of worship and supported through appropriate means of recognition of duty. Crosses designating the level of service will be worn by those assigned to serve at worship services.
The Order of St. John is an important way for youth to serve Jesus, the church, and specifically our congregation. Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church takes seriously our leadership role in our worship services and values participation in the rich liturgy of our traditions.
